On the Jordanian side of the Dead Sea there are two (2004) five star resorts, one is operated by Marriott and the other by Movenpick. The Movenpick complex is far more picturesque, as many of its rooms are situated in private cabins arranged in a mock-up Arab village. However, when we were there, the Marriott had nicer swimming pools. Both are wonderful resorts offering superb accomodation, luxurious spa facilities, a beautiful view overlooking the Dead Sea, excellent restaurants, and swimming in both pools and in the sea itself.

There is (or was in 2004) nothing on the Israeli side of the Dead Sea which could compare in quality. By international standards, the prices of both resorts were quite reasonable.

From either resort it is possible to get a taxi into Amman, for a day of shopping in the suqs and shopping malls, or just to walk around. The ancient city of Jerash is just north of Amman, and is also worth a visit. Day trips to Petra can also be arranged.
