Christmas Eve in Bethlehem
Church of the Nativity, Dec 24, 2002
The church is shared by three branches of Christianity: Catholic, Greek
Orthodox and Armenian.
The three sects have
religious services at different times and follow different religious
calendars and traditions. Thus, Christmas Day is celebrated in the
Church of the Nativity three times each year: on December 25 by the
Catholics and other Western sects, on
January 6 by the Eastern Orthodox Church, and on January 19 by the
Armenians. (In the rest of the world, Armenian Christmas coincincides
with Orthodox Christmas. Because of the small size of the church, they
are celebrated on different dates in Bethlehem, to allow as many
worshippers to take part as possible.
